Capture the vibe of Washington D.C. and the Dada art movement for Moxy Washington D.C. Downtown

Creators Selected On
October 19, 2018
Following the success of previous #MoxyBlankCanvas campaigns, Moxy Hotels (part of Marriott Int.) is now looking for an official Artist-in-Residence for its new hotel opening in Washington D.C. Downtown in October 2018.

Visual artists around the world are invited to create an art installation for a large wall in the lobby area of the hotel. The artwork can be static or moving and should capture the historical, scholarly and patriotic side of Washington D.C., as well as the Dada art movement and Moxy's 'Play On' attitude. This could come in the form of a modern twist on life in Washington D.C., perhaps incorporating pops of color showing the creative side of Downtown D.C., or a nod to the historical culture for which the city is well-known.

To the ring, Moxy Washington D.C. Downtown is offering an Artist the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their work be on permanent display in the hotel's lobby area. The Selected Artist will install their work in the hotel, and inspire hotel guests to explore the real Washington D.C. and its culture. Before submitting, please read the 'Your Submission' section below and check out this Dada art movement mood board for style inspiration, and this Washington DC mood board for inspiration on the city.

The Selected Artist will receive $5,000 plus $1,500 production budget to bring their artwork to life. In addition, the Selected Artist will travel to Washington D.C. in October 2018 to install their artwork in the hotel, and attend the hotel's Coming Out Party on October 30, 2018 (travel and accommodation provided) attended by international media, influencers and other VIPs. Three Finalists will receive $500 each and potential exposure across the @MoxyHotels and @MoxyWashingtonDC Instagram channels.
Before submitting your work, please consider the following:
  • Please submit:
    • Visual / sketch / mockup of what you propose to paint / install on the wall (JPEG/PNG). If you are thinking of submitting a video installation piece, please provide a treatment/storyboard in your visuals.
    • Project Plan (in English) including how you'll use the production budget, what materials you will use etc. (PDF)
    • Examples of your previous work (PDF)
  • Proposed work should be suitable for a wall that is 3.35m (W) by 5.66m (H). The wall will be within the lobby area of the hotel. Please see further images of the space here.
  • Capture the historical, scholarly and patriotic side of Washington D.C. and the 'Play on' Moxy attitude, in any visual artwork form. The judges will be looking positively on submissions that are inspired by the Dada Art Movement, and incorporate typography, pops of color and collage in a playful and unique way.

  • Check out this Dada art movement mood board for style inspiration, and this Washington DC mood board for inspiration on the capital city.
  • Keep in mind that the Selected Artist will be painting or installing their artwork in the hotel over a maximum of four (4) consecutive days between October 25-29, 2018. Your proposal and artwork should therefore be possible to be installed (by one person, or you may use the production budget to bring in further crew) within the timeline.
  • The Selected Artist should be available and able to travel to Washington DC, USA for up to four (4) continuous days between October 25-29, 2018 in order to install the artwork, and attend the hotel's Coming Out Party on October 30, 2018.
  • You must include your Instagram @handle within your description or Talenthouse profile to ensure you are credited whenever your submission is showcased on the @MoxyHotels and @MoxyWashingtonDC Instagram channels. Also if you are selected, you will be asked to share 10 posts on Instagram using #AtTheMoxy #MoxyWashingtonDC and #MoxyBlankCanvas so don't forget to get your profile up to date.
