Illustrate stories of Amsterdam for Moxy Amsterdam Houthavens

Creators Selected On
December 1, 2017

"The jury had a very tough time choosing from all submissions, so many smashing ideas we liked a lot that we could have easily decorated half the hotel with your great proposals; all very Moxy in their own way. We would like to thank each of you for bringing in your best qualities and talents, and sharing them with us!"

Gus Maussen (Captain, Moxy Houthavens), on behalf of the judging panel.
Following the success of previous #MoxyBlankCanvas campaigns, Moxy Hotels (part of Marriott Int.) is now looking for an official Artist-in-Residence for its new hotel opening in Amsterdam in December 2017.

Illustrators, typographers and graffiti artists from the Netherlands are invited to design a large wall mural within the public space of the hotel. The mural should capture a range of short stories that portray Amsterdam, and the Moxy attitude of 'Getting Away With It'. This could come in the form of cheeky stories of what people can get away with in Amsterdam, including the city's canals, showing the vibrant music scene and nightlife of the city, or perhaps incorporating stories of the culture the city is so well-known for.

To mark the opening, Moxy Amsterdam Houthavens is offering an illustrator, typographer or graffiti artist from the Netherlands a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their work live as a central part of the hotel’s permanent art collection. The selected artwork will be brought to life by the artist and featured on a wall in the hotel’s public space, and should inspire hotel guests to explore Amsterdam, and find out more about the city. The wall measures 3.6m (H) by 6.35m (W).

Artists are asked to submit their portfolio of previous work, along with a visual/sketch and Proposal Plan of what they propose to paint/install on the wall. Moxy and its panel of judges are looking for artwork that embodies the spirit of ‘Getting Away With It’ in Amsterdam, and captures stories of what people can get up to in the city. The more fun, spontaneous and playful, the better. Before submitting, please read the 'Your Submission' section below and check out this mood board for style inspiration, and this mood board for inspiration on the city of Amsterdam.

The Selected Artist will receive €5,000 plus €2,000 production budget to bring their design to life. The Selected Artist will be brought to Amsterdam in January 2018 to install their design in the hotel, and attend the hotel's Coming Out Party in February/March 2018 (travel and accommodation provided) attended by international media, influencers and other VIPs. Two Finalists will receive €500 each and potential exposure across the @MoxyHotels and @MoxyAmsterdam Instagram channels.
Your Submission
Before submitting your work, please consider the following:
  • Please submit:
    • A visual/sketch/mockup of what you propose to paint/install in the hotel (JPEG/PNG).
    • A Proposal Plan (pdf, in English) outlining what materials you will be using. The Proposal Plan should keep in mind the production budget available.
    • Examples of your previous work (portfolio).
  • The proposed work should be 3.6m (H) by 6.35m (W). The wall will be within the public space of the hotel. Please see further images of the space here.
  • Tell a range of short stories of how you can 'get away with it' in Amsterdam, using illustration visuals, typography and/or graffiti. The judges will be looking positively on submissions that incorporate the canals, music, DJ culture and nightlife of Amsterdam in a fun, playful and unexpected way.
  • Check out this mood board for style inspiration, and this mood board for inspiration on the city of Amsterdam.

  • When creating your work, you are encouraged to keep the Moxy attitude of ‘Getting Away With It’, the short stories of what people can get away with in Amsterdam, and the brand's bold, playful spirit in mind. (Please find more information below).
  • Keep in mind that the Selected Artist will be painting or installing their artwork into the hotel over a maximum of ten (10) days. Your proposal and artwork should therefore be possible to install (by one person, or you may use the production budget to bring in further crew) within the timeline.
  • The Selected Artist should be available to travel to Amsterdam for up to 10 continuous days between 3 January - 12 January 2018 in order to paint or install the wall mural, and attend the hotel's Coming Out Party in February/March 2018.
  • You must include your Instagram @handle within your description or Talenthouse profile to ensure you are credited whenever your submission is showcased on the @MoxyHotels and @MoxyAmsterdam Instagram channels. Also if you are selected, you will be asked to share 10 posts on Instagram using #AtTheMoxy #MoxyAmsterdam and #MoxyBlankCanvas so don't forget to get your profile up to date.
